Google Drive will soon be converted into a backup tool with a brand new feature.
Instead of storing files inside the Drive folder, Google will start monitoring and backing up files inside of any folder in your computer, including your entire documents folder, your desktop, or any other location you choose.
On June 28, Google reported that the new backup feature is called Backup and Sync and will be released in the form of a new application sometime this month.
Most probably, the new Google Drive feature will replace the standard Google Drive app, as well as the Google Photos Backup application.
The Google team advises regular PC users to download the new Backup and Sync application as soon as it’s released, however, they say that business users would better use the existing Drive application at this point.
Presently, no one can say how users would deal with the new Backup and Sync feature. Probably, they would still be able to open and edit some common file types stored in Drive, although it’s not certain if users will be able to sync those files back down to multiple other computers, using Drive as an intermediary.
Also, it is very likely these files to count toward users’ Google Drive storage limit, which will be a rather fast way of reaching the free accounts’ 15GB cap.
Nevertheless, the Backup and Sync feature is going to be quite useful for users, thus it is considered as a very smart move by Google.
Users have asked Dropbox to add something similar for a long time, though the developers have not done anything on this matter yet. Instead, users have always had to store files directly in the app’s local folder.
Considering all the above-mentioned, it looks like soon, Google will be the best choice for anyone looking for more flexibility in syncing their applications.
