Uninstall Error SL9DW61 “Virus”

I wrote this article to help you remove Error SL9DW61. This Error SL9DW61 removal guide works for all Windows versions.

Error SL9DW61 is a fake security alert. The software behind this notification has been classified as a potentially unwanted program (PUP). The rogue tool tries to convince people that there is an infection on their machine which needs to be removed. By displaying a fake security warning, Error SL9DW61 throws people off of its tracks. The PUP tries to push users to carry out certain tasks. If you follow the instructions of the secluded program, you will encounter more severe issues. You should disregard the claims of Error SL9DW61.

What security threats does Error SL9DW61 pose?

The insidious program has a defined objective in its agenda. The purpose of the PUP is to get users to cooperate. Error SL9DW61 is an invalid error code. A notification which has a code associated to it is easy to proof. You can copy the transcript to check if it has been registered by Microsoft. If it has not, you can regard the notification as fake. Another sign about the unreliability of Error SL9DW61 is that the message is stated to derive from the web page you were viewing at the moment. This is not within the realm of possibility. Anti-virus programs and the Windows firewall are the only viable sources for security warnings.

The Error SL9DW61 Virus

Error SL9DW61 has been designed to resemble a Windows notification. The message states that there is a malicious program on the hard drive. It warns the user that certain information can be stolen from his machine. This includes his Facebook login, credit card details, email account login and the photos he stores on his computer. The PUP uses a clever tactic to pressure people and manipulate their better judgment. Error SL9DW61 warns the user not to close the page he has currently loaded. According to the alert, exiting the site would allow the malware to obtain the vulnerable data.

Error SL9DW61 proposes a solution in the form of a hot line. The number users are advised to call is 1-877-227-0785. This phone line is said to be toll free. It has not been reported whether this statement is true or not. We can tell you for certain that the line is operated by cyber thieves. They will state that they have identified the malware on your PC and tell you that only a particular AV tool can remove it. The software in question is expensive and it is unreliable. Installing it to your computer would lead to further, more severe security issues. Error SL9DW61 is the actual threat. You need to have it deleted.

How did Error SL9DW61 penetrate my system?

Error SL9DW61 uses a couple of propagation vectors. The preferred distribution method is bundling. The shady program travels in bundles with freeware, shareware and pirated applications. It adds itself as a bonus with the main utility from the bundle. You need to find where it is mentioned in the terms and conditions and deselect it. Be sure to get acquainted with the end user license agreement (EULA) of all programs you add to your machine. Never accept additional software. It could be malicious. We advise you to stick to confirmed programs and sources. Do not acquire tools whose reputation you are unfamiliar with. Make sure a given website is reliable before proceeding to download content from it.

The other way for Error SL9DW61 to access your computer is through a spam email. The PUP lurks behind an attachment, waiting for the user to open it. Doing so would initiate the download and install of the covert program. Spammers can compose emails well to make them appear legitimate. To proof the reliability of a given message, check the sender’s contacts. If he is writing on behalf of a company or an institution, he should have used an official email account. You can visit the public website of the entity in question and consult the contacts page.

  1. Hello Daniel! I’m worried because I fell in this fake alert and I gave them the remote control of my laptop. Please, can you recommend me what should I do? Thanks in advance.

    1. Hey Johanna,

You should not worry for that fake message anymore. These web pages are created by so called “Tech Support Scammers”. Their only goal is to make you call them on the phone. Once you are one-on-one, they are doing their best to make you believe that your PC has severe virus infection and that manual removal is needed. This “service” usually costs $200-$500. In fact, they are doing nothing to fix your problem, because it simply does not exist.

      Thanks,
      Daniel
