Remove uTorrentie “Virus” from Chrome/Firefox

I wrote this article to help you remove uTorrentie. This uTorrentie removal guide works for Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer.

uTorrentie is an adware program which targets the uTorrent client. The furtive tool has been given a similar name to the legitimate program in order to mislead the user. The adware runs a process called WebHelper. This task may sound genuine, but it carries out unsolicited activity. uTorrentie is used to raise revenue by promoting third party content and collecting information on people. The adware can cause security issues. We advise you to have it removed as soon as you discover it on your machine.

What makes uTorrentie a dangerous program?

uTorrentie displays advertisements, containing shopping deals. They appear in different formats. The adware embeds some of them within the interface of uTorrent, while others pop up on the screen. The formats encompass banners, in-text links, coupon boxes, freebies, interstitial, contextual, transitional, inline, floating, comparison and full-page ads. Clicking on a window would take you to a third party website. The reliability of the supported domains is not accounted for. Any of them could transmit an infection to your computer. We advise you to stay away from the adverts.

The developers of uTorrentie do not aim to infect computers with malware. They just do not bother to take security precautions, like scanning the content the program links to. This function would require an effort to be included. The creators of the adware have elected not to make their work sophisticated. They only take advantage of the positives, like collecting payment for supporting third party websites. Each click adds a certain amount to the commissions they receive. This is why uTorrentie displays so many advertisements. The burden of the security risk is assumed entirely by the end user.

Another risk around uTorrentie is having your personal information recorded and sold. The shady tool gathers input from users’ browsing sessions, like their history, tracking cookies, keystrokes, email, IP address, geographic location, zip code, demographic profile, telephone number, login credentials and other sensitive data. The owners of the adware can trade your private details on dark markets without asking for your permission or notifying you about their intentions. Your personal information can fall into the hands of cyber criminals.

How did uTorrentie get installed to my computer?

There are a couple of ways to contact uTorrentie. The preferred distribution method for the adware is bundling. The insidious program often attaches itself to other programs, like freeware, shareware and pirated copies of paid applications. The furtive tool tries to get installed in parallel with the utility you have decided to add to your machine. It would be offered as a bonus tool with the main program. You need to find where it is mentioned and deselect it. Make sure to read through the terms and conditions of the software you intend to install to your computer.

Spam emails are another common host for uTorrentie. The adware can latch onto attached files, listed as documents. The secluded program would get downloaded and installed to your machine when you open the attachment. If you do not expect to receive an email from a reliable source, take precautions when handling an arrival. Check the sender’s contacts to confirm his identity. He should have used an official account to get in touch with you. If he has written on behalf of the local post, a courier firm, a social network, a shopping platform, a bank or another confirmed entity, go to its official website and consult the contacts page.
