Remove Uncheckit “Virus” from Chrome/Firefox

I wrote this article to help you remove Uncheckit. This Uncheckit removal guide is working for all Windows versions.

Uncheckit is a bogus security tool. It has been developed to appear legitimate. The program has an official website, registered to the domain uncheckit.com. Uncheckit is meant to prevent unwanted software from entering your computer. The utility deselects extra tools, offered together with other programs. Uncheckit supports the following versions of the Windows OS: 10, 8, 7, Vista and XP. The user will receive a warning message each time a dubious program is spotted. While this functionality may be useful, it is not the actual purpose of Uncheckit. Security specialists have categorized the tool as a potentially unwanted program (PUP). Research has revealed that Uncheckit supports third party content. The PUP displays pop-up advertisements, leading to sponsored websites. Their security status is questionable. Uncheckit also has tracking capabilities.

What threats does Uncheckit expose your computer to?

The clandestine program can lead you to corrupted websites. If you are not attentive enough, you may not realize that you are being led astray. Uncheckit generates an abundance of pop-up advertisements, promoting bargain shopping deals. The ads appear in different formats, including banners, coupon boxes, in-text links, floating, comparison, interstitial, transitional, contextual, inline and full-page ads. They show exclusive deals for a variety of goods. The product palette consists of clothes, accessories, technological devices, furniture, decorations, gardening equipment, games, toys and other items.

The source of an ad is only mentioned in a small sign, located on the window frame. It lists a phrase like “Ads by Uncheckit”, “Powered by Uncheckit” or “Brought to you by Uncheckit”. You may not take notice of it. As good as the offers may seem, keep in mind that the tool is not a shopping helper. The advertisements are unsolicited and therefore risky. Their reliability is not guaranteed or accounted for. Any given ad could lead you to a malicious website, containing malware.

The other major threat around Uncheckit is having your personal details recorded and sold on dark markets. The PUP can track your browsing sessions and gather information on you. This starts from your browsing history and extends to your geographic location, IP address, e-mail and online account details. The owners of Uncheckit can sell users’ data without asking for their permission. There is no way to control the tracking activity.

How is Uncheckit spread to computers?

Uncheckit is available for free from its official website. The platform provides a download link for the 2.2.1 version of the tool. If you do not recall acquiring Uncheckit, do not be surprised to discover it on your system. The PUP is accustomed to using dark patterns. This term refers to unofficial distribution techniques. Knowing the propagation vectors of Uncheckit can help you protect your PC from it and avoid contacting other covert programs in the same manner.

The PUP uses the same technique it offers protection against. It attaches itself to other programs and tries to get installed together with them. This practice is called bundling. Uncheckit can get attached to freeware, shareware and pirated copies of paid programs. It will be included per default, meaning you have to manually deselect it. Failing to do so would give the PUP the green light. You should read the terms and conditions of all programs you intend to add to your system.

The other entry point for Uncheckit are spam e-mails. The rogue program can be secluded with an attachment to a bogus e-mail message. Be advised that opening the host file can be enough to infect your machine. A malicious macro or a corrupt Javascript code can initiate the download and install of the PUP on command prompt. To filter spam from reliable postage, check the e-mail account and the return address listed. The details should match the contacts of the entity the sender is representing.
